Also known as Lily of the Valley, this is a popular evergreen plant, (height and spread around 4m/13ft) which like other Mahonia varieties, is grown for its attractive winter foliage and fragrant, pretty flowers. It has an upright growth habit and long branches, holding spiny, glossy green leaves along its axis. Stalks of bright yellow, fragrant flowers are produced at the ends of branches from late autumn to late winter, followed by blue-black berries. This variety is a great revelation at the back of a border, displaying colour and interest when other plants in front of it die back. It is best grown in moist but well drained soil in partial to full shade.

An erect, hardy, evergreen shrub with dark green, sharply toothed leaves, (max height 5m/16ft, max spread 4m/13ft) and bright yellow fragrant flowers in dense arching clusters from late autumn to late winter (November to February). Blue-black berries form after flowering in late winter. It should be planted in full sun or partial shade in a moist, fertile soil.
