Ericaceous plants or ‘acid loving’ and ‘lime hating’ plants must only be grown in lime free, free draining, acidic soil or compost, ideally with a pH of 4.5-6.0, or pH 7 with careful application of Iron Sulphate twice a year. If your soil is above pH 7 you can still grow ericaceous plants – just get hold of some attractive pots or containers instead!
The popular majority in this group - Rhododendrons, Azaleas and Camellias all grow well in full sun but enjoy a little shade and shelter too, which is rarely a problem in most gardens with fence or wall nearby.
