Opuntia cyclodes
This was added on 05/02/2004
A hardy rare cactus that can be grown outside in extremely well drained soil that is made up of virtually 60-80 % grit in raised borders or on steep slopes or in pots - anywhere that is free draining. Needs to be planted in full sun. Hardy down to - 23°C but only if kept on the dry side in the winter.

Lomatia ferruginea
This was added on 03/02/2004
A Protea from Chile with a beautiful symmetrical shape and should reach 3m or more. Has very attractive fern like foliage. Clusters of red and yellow flowers are borne for long periods in the summer and are followed by canoe shaped seed pods. Likes a good well drained soil and should be hardy to about minus 6°C.

Leucadendron inca gold

A tidy upright growing evergreen shrub producing striking deep yellow tulip shaped flowers on reddish stems in autumn and through the winter. Height 1.5m, spread 1.5m, grow in well drained acid soil in full sun, hardy to -6C so protect from hard frost.

Dryandra formosa
This was added on 03/02/2004
This marvellous Protea from South Western Australia produces globular heads of fiery yellow / orange flowers 5-10cms across. In our climate plants will probably get to around 2-3m tall. Add plenty of sharp grit when planting. They prefer an acidic soil and will not tolerate heavy soils. Probably hardy to about -5°C. Plant in full sun.

Lastreopsis microsora

A lovely fern from New Zealand that is often found growing on riverbanks and in low lying forests. Fronds can be anywhere from 30-85cms long and are bright green and lacy. Can spread by the creeping rhizome. Does best in damp rich soil in shade or semi shade.

Bomarea caldasii

A deciduous climber from South America with umbels of funnel shaped brick red to orange and yellow flowers from late spring to Autumn. Height up to 3-4m. Plant in fertile, moist soil that is well drained. Needs full sun. Hardy to about minus 8°C. Mulch well. Will die down to ground level in the winter.

Cordyline jurassic jade

An excellent new introduction from new zealand with soft slightly curled deep dull olive broad leaves, and a growth habit similar to purple tower giving it a distinctive old world look. Height up to 5 m. grow in moisture retentive but free draining soil in full sun. Excellent for tubs and pots.

A hardy evergreen plant form New Zealand that resembles a small fine leaved flax grown for its glossy dark blue berries in autumn. Height up to 60 cms with a spread of 40-60 cms. Plant in moist but well drained soil in full sun or semi shade. A great plant for mass planting as ground cover.

Watsonia pillansii

A slender clump forming perennial from South Africa. Sword shaped leaves from 25 - 60 cms. long are complimented from Summer to Autumn with branched spikes of 20 - 25 tubular bright orange to orange red flowers. Growing to about 50 - 120 cms tall with a spread of 10 cms this is a great plant for growing in conservatories or outside in sheltered gardens. Protect from hard frost.

Asplenium oblongifolium x bulbiferum

An outstanding evergreen fern from New Zealand. A hybrid variety of Asplenium bulbiferum and Asplenium oblongifolium with large bright green glossy fronds covered in bulbils up to 1.5m in length. Height and spread 1m with. Plant in rich moist but free draining soil in a sheltered site. Needs light to full shade. Hardy to minus 4 degrees but has not been tested in colder conditions yet.

A slow growing evergreen hardy conifer from New Zealand with irregularly shaped small narrow leathery foliage and red male cones contrasting well with the leaves. Forms a dense bush up to 3-4m tall and a spread of 2-3m. Plant in a moisture retentive but free draining soil in semi shade. Makes an excellent specimen plant.

A fast growing fully hardy bamboo. Canes are yellow to olive green and up to 3cm across. Branches are formed in clusters. Unusually the canes of this bamboo are not hollow but are solid throughout. A wonderful plant and is excellent for solitary planting. Height up to 6m with a spread in the region of 2.5m.

An evergreen bromeliad with 60cms long lance shaped greeny ash white leaves with 5mm reddish brown spines that form a rosette 1.2-2m wide. When established it produces a 2m tall flower spike of tubular dark blue flowers in summer. Plant in extremely well drained soil on a bank or wall in full sun avoiding too much winter wet. Hardy to about minus 6 degrees when established.

Xeronema callistemon

An extremely rare plant from New Zealand that is actually a large tufted perennial with sword like leaves up to 1m in length ( 3ft ) resembling a Phormium or large Iris. In spring flower stalks up to 60cms ( 2ft ) emerge from the centre of the fan of leaves bearing gently curving brush like flowers up to 30cms long (1ft ) These flowers are coral red and tipped with bright orange. The ultimate container pot where it will flower earlier due to constriction of the roots. Grow in an a very well drained orchid type compost. Protect from hard frost and grow in an open sunny situation.

Aloe brevifolia

A dwarf Aloe from South Africa that forms a stemless dense rosette of grey green leaves with soft spiny white teeth and a 40cm tall pale scarlet flower in summer. Height 10-15cms with a spread of 15cm on each rosette. These rosettes make up a large group. Plant in extremely well drained soil in full sun. Hardy only to light frosts down to about minus 4 degrees.

Elegia racemosa Rustling reed

This stunning Restio from the mountains of South Africa grows to a height of 1.75m with a spread of 1m. In the summer brown spikelets and papery spathes are produced, making it very attractive as a landscaping plant. Plant in very well drained soil that retains some moisture in the summer. Mulching with bark will help to retain moisture and afford some frost protection, although moderate frosts should not be a problem.

A rare evergreen fern from New Zealand that has a tufted habit with distinctive triangular shaped, leathery green fronds about 75cm long, that curve downwards. Meryta sinclairii

Known as the New Zealand Pukka this rare evergreen shrub is grown for it's tropical looking foliage. The leaves can reach 50cms long by 20 - 30 cms wide. These are leathery and distinctly veined and slightly veined along the margins. Long flower panicles in the summer are followed by clusters of grape like fruits. Protect from hard frosts - especially when young. A fantastic plant to give a tropical feel to the conservatory. Best planted in full sun. Height 3-4m with a spread of 3m.

Musa lasiocarpa

An unusual dwarf hardy banana that is reputed to be able to take temperatures as low as minus 10 degrees C. From above the Himalayan snow line this banana has exotic yellow leaves followed by minature fruits. Large leaves have red veins. Plant in sun or partial shade. Height up to 2m. Mulch well in the winter. Will take most conditions. Also well suited for the conservatory.

A high altitude palm reported to grow at over 3000 m in the Andes. This palm looks like a coconut palm as it matures with elegant dark green leaves that are silvery beneath. A rare Cordyline with light bronze to olive green broad leaves with a distinctive old world look. Grows on a trunk up to 2-3m tall after many years. Makes an excellent tub plant. Plant in deep rich but well drained fertile soil. Use John Innes no 3 for pot growing in an open sunny position.
