Proteas

 Grevillea juniperina
A stunning evergreen shrub from Australia that forms a prostrate to upright, branched, dense rounded shrub with narrow linear pine like needles. Greenish yellow to red 6cm long flowers in spring to mid summer give the plant a very exotic look. Height up to 2m with a 1m spread. Plant in very well drained acidic soil in full sun, a fairly hardy plant that once established should stand temperatures as low as minus 7 degrees.

 Grevillea lanigera Mt. Tamburitha
Also known as compacta this wonderful dwarf evergreen shrub has a prostrate habit growing to 60-100cms high and wide. Pinkish, red and cream flowers are produced in the autumn and winter. Plant in well drained soil in full sun. Protect from severe frost but should be hardy when established to about minus 7 degrees C.

 Grevillea rosemarinifolia
Evergreen rounded shrub, densely branched, with dark green needle-shaped leaves that are feathery on the under-sides. Produces clusters of tubular red or pink flowers in the summer. Height 2m. Plant in full sun in well-drained acid soil, add peat if necessary. Should be hardy to minus 10 degrees C. Best protected from severe cold winds. Can be grown in a tub.

Evergreen shrub with bushy needle foliage and creamy yellow flowers in summer. Height 2-4m. Spread 1-3m. Plant in full sun in a poor well-drained soil. Should stand temperatures as low as minus 5 degrees when established.

 Hakea lissocarpha (Honey Bush)
Hardy evergreen shrub with stiff spiny foliage and white/pink fragrant feathery flowers in summer. Height and spread 1m. Plant in full sun or dappled shade in any well-drained soil. Will tolerate drought.

 Hakea salicifolia gold medal
Grows to 3m but will tolerate pruning. Cream flowers are lightly scented. Able to stand wetter soil than most of the Protea family but will benefit from free draining acid soil in full sun. Mature plants are quite hardy and have been known to tolerate minus 10 degrees for short periods.A Protea displaying prominent leaf variegation. Older leaves are cream and green while the younger growth is pink ageing to light pink and cream. This gives an effect in spring of a bush with a pink halo.

An evergreen tree from Australia with small creamy white flowers in summer. Dark green needle like leaves. Height 3-6m. Plant in full sun in a well-drained neutral to acid soil. Hardy to minus 5c. An easily grown shrub that is very useful for screening purposes and soil stabilizing.

 Hakea suavelons Syn. Hakea drupacea
An Australian needlebush with light green silky-hairy young growth. Leaves are made up of many ridged needles. Produces white sweetly scented flowers. A very good plant for coastal exposure and is extensively used in shelter belts. Grows best in full sun in an acid soil but will tolerate some alkalinity as long as it has good drainage. May be damaged by heavy frosts but will usually recover. Can be clipped from an early age.

 Hakea teretifolia (Dagger Hakea)
Evergreen small tree from Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales in Australia. Creamy white flowers in the summer are scented. Dark green stiff needle like foliage. Height 2-3m likely in this country. Plant in well-drained acid soil in full sun. Probably one of the better Hakeas for a slightly heavier soil. Regular pruning will ensure a compact, less straggly shrub.

 Knightia excelsa
A New Zealand Protea that forms a fastigate shaped evergreen tree with long narrow, pointed, leathery leaves and rusty red bottlebrush like racemes in spring and summer. These flowers are very attractive to Bees and Butterflies and are followed by unusual looking seedpods. Height up to 7m with a spread of 2m. Plant in reasonably well drained soil in sun or partial shade. Protect from hard frost when young but mature plants seem to be fairly hardy.

 Leucadendron Belle Supreme
An attractive tidy plant producing 50cm stems of deep burgundy red bracts from autumn and through winter. Ultimate height and spread 1m. This makes it very suitable for container cultivation. Needs a well drained, low phosphate, acidic compost. Mulch with bark or pine needles. We have had experience of this plant surviving minus 6 but is rated as being able to stand temperatures as low as minus 10 degrees C.

 Leucadendron discolor
An evergreen shrub from South Africa with bright flame red flowers surrounded by creamy yellow bracts in spring. Makes an excellent cut flower. Height and spread 1.5m. Frost tender when young. Protect from hard frosts below minus 5 degrees when established. Makes and excellent container plant for patios or conservatories. Overwintering in a greenhouse is recommended in cold areas. Plant in a low phosphate well drained soil or compost and place in full sun.

 Leucadendron galpini
An evergreen shrub with twisted hairless leaves and single stem. Silver round flower heads and cones in late summer. Height 2-3m. Plant in well-drained gritty neutral-acid poor soil in full sun. Tolerant of occasional frosts to minus 5 degrees. Generally quite easy to grow. Do not feed with phosphates.

A tidy upright growing evergreen shrub producing striking deep yellow tulip shaped flowers on reddish stems in autumn and through the winter. Height 1.5m, spread 1.5m, grow in well drained acid soil in full sun, hardy to -6C so protect from hard frost.

 Leucadendron Maui Sunset
A hybrid variety with large creamy white bracts edged with red, fading to pale yellow in the spring. Height and spread in the region of 1m. An excellent, rare plant that will make an outstanding tub plant when placed in full sun in a well drained, acidic soil. In mild areas grow outside and protect from severe frosts as established plants can survive down to minus 6 degrees.

 Leucadendron Mrs Stanley
A hybrid form of Leucadendron with soft pinkish red bracts in autumn deepening to rich burgundy over winter. Forms a low bushy spreading shrub 1m high with a similar spread. Plant in very free draining soil in full sun. Makes an excellent bright and spectacular tub plant using a low phosphate well drained compost.

 Leucadendron Safari Sunset
Evergreen dense rounded shrub with claret red flowers, changing to pink as they mature. Used extensively for cut flowers. Height and spread to 2m. Plant in full sun in free draining soil. Hardy if planted in very free draining soil. It should be able to stand temperatures as low as minus 10 Degrees. Protect from severe winds.

 Leucadendron Safari Sunshine
This is a very interesting cultivar of the popular Leucadendron safari sunset. Evergreen dense rounded shrub with claret red striped flowers. The foliage is variegated and adds great colour to the garden. Now being introduced to the cut flower trade. Height and spread to 1.5m. Plant in full sun in free-draining soil. Reputed to be fairly frost hardy so we would advise protecting in very cold weather.

 Leucadendron salignum Early Yellow
Hardy evergreen shrub with bushy green red-tipped foliage bearing yellow bracts from late summer to winter. Height to 2m. Plant in well-drained soil in full sun. No fertilizers. Hardy to about minus 8 degrees C in the right soil type.
