 Arbutus unedo (Strawberry Tree)
Evergreen fully hardy shrubby tree with pink-white lily of the valley type flowers in the autumn, followed by red strawberry like fruits. Bark is red- brown, rough and shredding. Height and spread up to 8m. Plant in well-drained fertile soil in full sun. An excellent plant for extreme coastal situations.

 Aristea ecklonii
A South African evergreen clump forming perennial with tufts of linear basal leaves. In summer bears loose spike like panicles of saucer shaped blue flowers. Height to 1m with a spread of 45cms. Grow in full sun in well-drained moderately fertile humus rich soil. Protect from hard frost.

 Aristea major
An evergreen clump forming perennial from South Africa with dense spikes of blue/purple flowers 1m tall in the summer. The plant has a spread of about 45cms and has 50cms long lance shaped leaves. Grow in a well-drained humus rich soil in full sun. Hardy to minus 5 degrees C.

A hardy evergreen, architectural plant from New Zealand with silver – green, Phormium like foliage and panicles of white flowers in the spring, followed by pink fruits in the summer. A wonderful plant for creating an exotic feel either in the garden or in pots. Plant in fertile well-drained soil in a partially shaded spot.

 Astelia chathamica (Silver Spear)
A New Zealand plant with beautiful silver foliage. Forms a clump of evergreen sword like leaves, which will reach about 1m high and with a similar spread. Grows very well in damp and mild conditions such as found here in the South West, but is hardy and can be grown in most parts of the UK. Orange berries appear in late summer. Eventually making a very exotic looking plant.

 Astelia nervosa (Bush Flax)
Evergreen perennial from New Zealand suitable for a coastal situation. Arching bronze-silvery-green foliage. Height 1.5m. Plant in moist but not boggy soil in sun or part-shade. Good groundcover.

 Astelia nervosa Westland
A stunning foliage plant from New Zealand with silvery bronze, sword like leaves, that turn red in colder conditions. Forms a clump up to 0.8m tall and 0.5m wide. Best grown in cool fertile well-drained soil that retains moisture. Add peat or compost when planting. Hardy to about minus 6 c. so far, but the larger the plant the greater the frost resistance. Protect young plants from severe frost. Panicles of flowers appear in summer, but it is mainly grown for its sub-tropical look.

 Baccharis halmifolia (Sea Myrtle)
A hardy vigorous growing shrub with tough grey green leaves with large marginal teeth and clusters of small white flower heads up to 15cms across in autumn. Height and spread up to 4m but can be trimmed and used as a coastal hedging plant. Plant in any reasonable soil in a sunny spot.

Evergreen shrub from Australia with spiny dark –green leaves, sometimes weeping. Small white flowers in winter. Height and spread 1-4m. Plant in any well-drained soil in full sun. Will tolerate most situations. Should be hardy to about minus 6 degrees C.

 Begonia grandis Evansii
A Begonia that can be grown outside all the year around in mild areas with long olive green deeply veined foliage and fragrant light pink flowers 3cm wide in summer. Height 50cms with a spread of 30cms. Plant in moisture retentive but freely draining soil and mulch well with bark for more frost protection. Top growth hardy to minus 2 degrees C so tends to die down to ground level each year but the tuberous roots seem more hardy. An attractive plant for borders and Jungle gardens.

An unusual variety from South Africa that forms a large shrub to small tree with pale brown bark, puckered leaves and heads of creamy flowers sometimes with an orange throat in summer.
